An amazing first effort
Kim Edwards is a highly gifted writer with a wonderful grasp of both character and language. While many of her locales are exotic, the characters are very recognizable in their humanity. Some stories made me cry, and others made me want to shake some sense into the characters. This book is an amazing first effort, and I look forward to Ms. Edwards' future works

Fabulous Story Collection
This book is full of a sincere magic and an earthly clarity. The characters' lives are extraordinary and compassionataly rendered -- I have been touched and moved by all their stories. If you love short story collections definitely read this book

Shape Under the Sheet: The Complete Stephen King Encyclopedia
Published in Hardcover by Popular Culture Ink (June, 1991)
Author: Stephen J. Spignesi

EVERYTHING YOU EVER WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT STEPHEN KING
My mind boggles at the amount of work that went into this book. If a character drinks a can of @TAB or uses a @KLEENEX on page 374 of IT or THE STAND, this book painstakingly catalogues that fact. If you're a dictionary or encyclopedia browser AND a Stephen King fan as well, this book is BIG FUN.

A must have for any King fan who likes to sweat the details!
I bought this book in 1991, when it first came out and at the time I had only read a couple of King books. After I got the book and looked over it and it described every character in detail from every book that King had written up to Four Past Midnight, it got me started again. I haven't stopped reading King since. It even has details about his short, uncollected works, many unknown works and complete references of movie adaptations of King's works. This book is more detailed than most of King's books themselves. Never get lost again with large novels that have tons of characters (e.g. The Stand-Uncut, or It). Waiting for the update as we speak. Please Mr. Spignesi, we anxiously await its arrival!!!!!!!!

Most exhaustive King Encyclopedia to date
If you are a Stephen King fan, this book is a must. Filled with information about every known Stephen King story, novel and screenplay up to the date of publication, including several not published. Every person, place and thing in every King story is explained and cross referenced. Everything you ever wanted to know about everything Stephen King has ever written. The only thing better than reading this book is the original Stephen King works

The Silence in the Garden (King Penguin)
Published in Paperback by Penguin USA (Paper) (September, 1989)
Author: William Trevor
Average review score:

Absoring, Moving Tale set on a Protestant Irish Estate
William Trevor has crafted yet another wee gem of a tale in "The Silence in the Garden", drawing upon class differences between the Protestant aristocracy and their Catholic neighbors and the bloody violence of the Irish civil war. Most of the tale is set in the 1930's, though events span decades from the early 1900's till the beginning of the 1970's. Sarah Pollexfen arrives on the estate during World War I as a governness to her affluent Rolleston cousins. Through her diaries we read of an unspeakable tragedy and quiet lives of desperation led by the Rolleston family.

IN DEEP BEFORE YOU KNOW IT...
...and therein lies only one facet of William Trevor's amazing gift. When I began this book, I thought I had stumbled upon a novel in a 'lighter' category by Trevor -- before I realized it, I was completely enmeshed in this story and its characters. Trevor's prose is incredibly crafted -- his attention to detail and his ability to develop his characters are almost without peer, but neither of these talents overshadows his story.

As in most of his marvelous writing, there are twists and turns awaiting the reader -- revelations completely unforseen and unimagined. As always, he brings the Irish character -- both individual and en masse -- to life completely and gently. Meticulous details are made known to us quietly, so that by midway through the this absorbing work, we almost feel that we are living among these people. He has the ability to allow us to know them without feeling we've been told about any of them -- more like we've gained the knowledge over time.

We see Sarah Polexfen come to the Irish island estate of Carriglas to serve as governess to the children of her relations, the Rollestons. Life there seems peaceful and detached -- but she senses there is something troubling under the surface, something of which she is not told and is unaware. Years later, when she returns to the island -- the children are grown, their father dead, the grandmother an aged matriarch -- events from the past begin to come clearer, verifying her earlier intuitions. The story is played out over a period from the early part of the 20th century, seeing the beginning of the 'troubles' in Ireland, to the early 1980s -- and the family looks much different in hindsight than when she first arrived.

There is a sweet sadness present in this story -- as in much of Trevor's writing -- but it never becomes maudlin. The events and dialogue are intelligent and, in their own way, endearing -- for we find ourselves growing to care about these characters, even the ones who are less than admirable. For in the end, they are only human, and humans have frailties and warts, and commit transgressions, no matter how admirable they may seem from a distance.

Every single work of William Trevor's fiction that I have read has been a great experience -- if you've never sipped from his cup, start here...start anywhere. His novels and short stories are equally amazing and well-written -- I cannot recommend his work as a whole highly enough.

An Absorbing & Enchanting Tale
This lovely novel is sort of William Trevor's take on a Henry James ghost story. A governess arrives at an enormous estate and discovers there is more than meets the eye. As always with Trevor, the prose is luminous and the characters are complex, deft and compelling. I recommend this, just as I would anything Trevor has written. He is the greatest prose writer of our time.

Son of the Sun: The Life and Philosophy of Akhnaton, King of Egypt
Published in Paperback by Amorc Funds (June, 1996)
Author: Savitri Devi
Average review score:

Still the best book on Akhnaton!
This book is an amazing combination of vivid, rhapsodic prose, rigorous scholarship, and philosophical speculation--with a fascist political subtext. Savitri Devi treats Akhnaton as a serious philosopher and carefully pieces together a very consistent and plausible reconstruction of his thought from his Hymns to the Aton and other texts, as well as an examination of Amarna iconography. Aside from her mistaken claim that Akhnaton was a fellow advocate of vegetarianism and animal rights (an error which she corrects in her later book IMPEACHMENT OF MAN), Devi's interpretation is still the most comprehensive, systematic, and plausible account of Akhnaton's philosophy. Although Devi does not deal explicitly with Nazism in this book, she makes the occasional allusion. In her later book DEFIANCE, however, she describes how she began SON OF THE SUN in India in 1942 when she was certain that National Socialism would conquer the world, and her aim was to present Akhnaton's solar cult as the ideal pagan religion to unify the new Aryan imperium. This is, in short, an amazingly ambitious book! I must, however, stress that this is merely the political SUBTEXT. Those who find Devi's politics distasteful can still benefit enormously from her account of Akhnaton. And those who share Devi's rejection of Biblical religion, and who dream of a revived paganism that is consistent with both the spirit of scientific inquiry and a politically unified yet culturally diverse world, will find much here to fire their imaginations. DON'T BE FOOLED BY THE DISINFORMATION OF THE REVIEWER WHO CLAIMS THAT THIS BOOK ASCRIBES AN EXTRATERRESTRIAL ORIGIN TO AKHNATON. THIS IS TOTALLY FALSE.

an excellent sympathetic and laudatory account of akhenaton
I have read half a dozen books on Akhenaton and I must say that this was the most "feel good" account of this unusual pharoah. While other modern writers have recently been on the attack against Akhenaton,(the revenge of Amun?) disparaging his thinking and accomplishments, this author offers a thoroughly thought provoking viewpoint, leaving the reader with a strong desire to have met the pharoah himself. The author is a throwback to the earlier , more sympathetic-to-Akhenaton-school of Breasted , and Arthur Weigall. This writer recommends Weigall's "Life and Times of Akhenaton " as your next read after "Son of the Sun". In summary, a wonderful book, written with a quiet passion ,which lingers long after the reading is done.

son of an alien?
the real information revealed in this book is not about akhnaton`s life, but it reveals the truth about the way he was actually a son of a descended extra terrestrial from another dimension!

The Song of Hiawatha
Published in Hardcover by Grammercy (December, 1993)
Authors: Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Frederic Remington
Average review score:

Haiwatha's tale
An undying tale.. legend... song... Wonderful poetry, the language is simply astounding! I have read the russian translation by Bounin, which was as remarkable as the original.

The language/ rhythm is as mythical and lovely as the plot
A book for generations. Mine was published 1898 and given me by my mother whose father(b.1875) gave it to her. It goes to the heart of the Indian race, a people susceptible to mythology and magic as their last great hope. Read it with an open mind, imagination, and for its beauty.

This is a great campfire book that really makes you think.
"The Song of Hiawatha" is the best book I have ever been exposed to. Every time I hear the wonderful rhyme of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, I begin to think of what this land was like before the Europeans conquered it. It is a wonderful tale of peace between nations and a great book to read to children.

The Soul Care Bible Experiencing And Sharing Hope God's Way
Published in Paperback by Nelson Bibles (01 July, 2001)
Authors: Tim Clinton and Nelson Bibles
Average review score:

Soul Care Bible Hits the Mark!
Outstanding Bible. Loaded with information to help people in various crisis situations. Very importantly, this Bible provides lots of scripture so that people in these situations can turn to several places in the Bible and see how God delivered those in similar situations. This Bible is also great for pastors, lay counselors, and others who desire to help people build a spiritual foundation as they address their life issues.

Finally a Counseling Bible
This Bible is a great asset to anyone in a counseling ministry. Articles about specific counseling issues such as raising children, divorce recovery, sexual abuse, guilt, eating disorders, and many more are included in the text. Even more numerous are the "soul notes" interspersed throughout the text. These notes explain how certain verses pertain to the counseling topics. Another outstanding feature of the Bible is the extensive index which enables the reader to locate the articles, soul notes and verses about a given topic. Definitely a wonderful version of the Bible.

A Lay Counseling Must!
Covers a wide variety of topics which a lay counselor might encounter. Format is easy to follow and very effective at getting the point across. Great resource for anyone wanting to help people.

Soul Play: Turning Your Daily Dramas into Divine Comedies
Published in Paperback by North Star Pubns (September, 1998)
Author: Vivian, Phd. King
Average review score:

Warmth and Wisdom
With her innate warmth and wisdom, Vivian King, takes the reader onto, or into, their own Inner Theatre "stage" to do some safe, enjoyable, profound, transformative work. This is her best known work, though she's known in Poland and other European countries as a great teacher, with workbooks in print in English and other languages.

How to become the director of your life
Imagine being the director of your own play. Imagine also being the playwright and your own cast of characters. Sound like a one-person show? It is! In Soul Play, Vivian King uses the metaphor of the "Inner Theatre" to represent your inner world and all that takes place inside your mind. The metaphor provides you with a way to identify and resolve issues on your own inner stage, and to do so when that resolution may seem impossible in the outer world. Soul Play will help you develop self-awareness, self-acceptance, and self- mastery. In reading this book, you, as one of the world's actors, can expect to become the director of your own life so you can play a more excellent part on the World Stage.

Overview of book
Here's a brief overview of what you'll find in this book. First, you'll consider the connection between your soul (playwright) and your play on Earth, and the reason why it's so easy to forget who you are behind all the masks you wear from day to day. Then you'll meet your "entourage"-your inner actors, director, and playwright, as well as members of your supporting cast and those in your audience. You'll take a tour of your inner theatre and explore the set. Here you'll discover what's happening on stage and behind the scenes. You'll explore the basement of your mind and also the upstairs (which I call the mysterium). After all that, you'll discover your director's inner sanctum and find your director's chair. Most importantly, you'll learn the secrets of who you are and what you do as the director. Using what I call the "three steps in directing," you'll have the opportunity to take one of your unaccomplished actors through all three steps to help! him or her become a star. To enhance that actor's new script, you and the playwright will explore how the role can be even better. Having practiced using the principles of directing, you'll realize that you now know how to work with the other actors to get your act together. Finally, you'll focus on the value of rehearsals and look more closely at the dark times in your life. You'll learn what to do when nothing seems to work and the stage appears empty. You'll discover what it means to give a peak performance and to enjoy each moment. And before completion, you'll also reflect on the roles you play in the Family, Organizational, and Community Theatres, and determine how your role fits into the larger World Play.

Speaking Our Truth: Voices of Courage and Healing for Male Survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse
Published in Paperback by Perennial Press (January, 1995)
Authors: Neal King and Thomas Moore
Average review score:

Moved me beyond sexism
I loved this book. Nothing so far that I have read by or about men has moved me beyond my own sexism like the vulnerability that allowed me to touch the hearts and souls of the men who wrote the words in this book. It was this book that caused me to look beyond the feminist agenda to incorporate the amazing number of boys who have been sexually abused. You won't find statistics in this book. But it will make you want to look for them. Boy children are no safer than girl children in this world. Until we *get* that, divide-and-conquer dynamics will keep us from ever being able to do anything about it.

Understanding the emotional experience of male sexual abuse.
'Speaking our Truth' is just that. A compilation of survivor's suffering and ultimate victory over male sexual abuse. He's given a venue to tie many different stories into common denominators that helps men to understand they are not alone in this experience. A 'must have' for survivors and their partners in recovery.

Speaking Our Truth is an eye opener
Even after I was able to start talking to a therapist about the abuse that I sufferred at the hands of a preist when I was 14 years old, I still was not able to truly accept that the abuse had actually happened to me. Neal King's collection of various men's uncensored accounts of their abuse and the feelings and descriptions of their struggles, gives any survivor of childhood abuse an opportunity to finally connect with the pain that affects every moment of our lives. When you feel like you may be ready to dance with your inner demons, this book is a perfect place to learn a few dance steps.
